The Flight Deck Veterans Group and the Carolinas Chapter of FDVG proudly announce the completion of our organization’s latest historic Naval aircraft restoration project. The A-6 Intruder on display atop the flight deck of the USS Yorktown (CV-10) Aircraft Carrier Museum in Charleston, SC has received a new lease on life. This project was completed in 25 working days over the course of the past 2 ½ months by a total of 22 of our very own Members and Associate Members. In an effort to keep this post from being too long, I will list the names of the volunteers in the comments section. The first several photos below show the A-6 in its completed configuration. The A-6 has been painted and marked in the scheme of VA-75 Sunday Punchers, circa July 1965 in honor of Rear Admiral Jeremiah A. Denton. Admiral Denton (then CDR) was serving as Commanding Officer of VA-75 when he was shot down over North Vietnam on July 18, 1965 and taken prisoner. Denton spent 2,767 days in captivity before being released during Operation Homecoming on February 12, 1973. I encourage all to read about Admiral Denton’s remarkable military career, particularly his leadership and bravery during captivity. It is our honor to have restored this aircraft to commemorate his service and sacrifice. The remaining photos show the condition of the aircraft before work commenced, and progress of the work over the past couple of months. Please join us in celebrating this awesome achievement and thanking the dedicated and very hard working volunteers for a job well done!
